Help rescue neglected animals and assist the veterinary service!

The Dominican Republic is home to numerous dogs in desperate need of rescue, care, and loving homes.

Many dogs, as well as horses, mules, and cats, are left homeless, sick, neglected, and malnourished. Sadly, these animals often go unnoticed and lack the affection and nurturing they require.

Fortunately, the local Veterinary Service has stepped in to provide emergency veterinary services, as well as finding homes overseas for rescued dogs!

This commendable Dog Animal Rescue Project offers an excellent opportunity for volunteers and interns to make a difference. You don’t need a veterinary background to volunteer; all you need is a love for dogs and a desire to be part of this impactful project.

By raising awareness and educating children about responsible animal care, we can create a positive and lasting impact on their well-being.

The project always has plenty of meaningful work to be done, and your support is crucial to continue providing care to these animals and finding them loving homes, especially for the dogs. As a volunteer, you can take on responsibilities such as animal care, training, and assisting in maintaining the kennels.

Furthermore, experienced vets or vet students are highly valuable in this endeavor. Whether it’s assisting in surgeries, participating in neutering campaigns, or similar tasks, this program offers a rewarding experience for veterinarians and vet students alike.

Program Activities you are welcome to join!

Activities can include but are not limited to

  • Caring for dogs, maintaining kennels, and taking them for walks
  • Assisting veterinarians during medical treatments, operations, and neutering or spaying procedures
  • Supporting the admission of new patients and handling administrative procedures
  • Participating in the annual castration campaign.
  • Organizing awareness and educational activities to improve the situation of neglected animals in the long run

You will have multiple opportunities to be involved with

It is advantageous if the volunteer or intern has already worked in an animal shelter or a veterinarian clinic, is a veterinary student or a dog walker, etc. But even with little experience, you will be of great help! It is important to keep in mind that the work includes some physical work like cleaning kennels and being outside. Nevertheless, the animals’ love and affection that you will be met with are worth all of the effort!

You will have multiple opportunities to be involved with and we encourage you to choose activities that fit your skills, abilities, and preferences. We are constantly adapting our activities to community needs and volunteer numbers and capacities. If you wish to specialize in a particular activity we will do our best to accommodate your personal preferences, but you can be asked to be involved in a combination of activities while being placed in this program

Although project work will be provided, volunteers are encouraged to come up with their ideas and initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to practice all your skills and learn new ones!

SPECIAL OFFER: Spanish language classes – volunteers and interns receive free language lessons every week. The classes focus on developing communication skills so that students can put their knowledge to practical use as soon as they step outside the classroom. Our teaching method enables students to develop four basic skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The idea is to learn Spanish naturally and spontaneously, just as students have learned their mother tongue. Our students are encouraged to speak Spanish right from the very first day, using it in typical real-life situations: the basic syllabus is supplemented by special exercises, such as role-play, situational dialogues, and work projects. Outside the classroom, the learning process continues as you are immersed in the Spanish language and the Dominican culture.
