NGO Management & Administration

Experience the day-to-day running of a small grassroots NGO

This Observation program is perfect for those wanting to learn more about how an NGO is managed and those interested in starting or working in an NGO! This volunteer placement gives a glimpse into the day-to-day running of a small grassroots NGO. The NGO Administration Volunteers would observe and assist the Volunteer Program Coordinator and the Aldeas de Paz director primarily in administrative work and community outreach.

This Intern/Volunteer program is very versatile

The NGO Administration Volunteer program is a very versatile program, giving insight into all of the many facets of the running of the Aldeas de Paz Foundation. Primarily a volunteer support-focused position, this role is critical in ensuring the smooth operation of the various ADP programs (ADP normally has anywhere between 3 and 15 volunteers working in the various programs and living on the Aldeas de Paz grounds, in hotels, or with host families). The NGO Administration volunteer will have a natural interest in meeting new people, be passionate about ensuring a positive experience for each volunteer and enjoy being called upon to assist with general administration of the foundation, as well as participating in each of the activities as necessary.

Activities can include:

For volunteers with limited Spanish language:

  • Working on website: updating, revising
  • Publishing the ADP Newsletter
  • Purchasing materials needed for ADP programs
  • Assisting with coordination of volunteers
  • Conducting volunteer introduction meetings
  • Assisting the Coordinator with general administration
  • Working in financial accountability tasks such as preparation of invoices, financial planning and creating budgets
  • Finding and maintaining various volunteer recruitment possibilities
  • Shadowing the Coordinator in typical NGO tasks as well as community meetings and arranging community interventions
  • Participating in each of the foundation programs as necessary

For volunteers with more advanced Spanish language (in addition to the above):

  • Working on public relations projects designed to mobilize community support. These include, but are not limited to: radio broadcasts, participating in neighborhood council meetings, writing bulletins, and organizing community projects
  • Grant writing/fundraising
  • Working with locals to find new volunteer opportunities

Requirements:

A typical NGO administration & management volunteer needs to be enthusiastic, willing to learn, ready for a challenge and have a desire to take initiative in coordinating a group of volunteers and daily tasks. Friendliness, care, commitment and patience are among important qualities. The participant would have a passion for development work, some experience in international volunteering, conversational or advanced Spanish and a desire to help other volunteers to have positive experiences with us. Activities that a volunteer can participate in are entirely dependent on their proficiency in Spanish and previous experience. Staff and other volunteers will support the participant. A six weeks minimum time commitment is required.
